About

What does kokua mean?

Kokua is a Hawaiian word and the simple meaning is to help. A deeper meaning is to extend help to others without expecting anything in return. In my work, I seek to develop kokua between everyone in my network including landlords, tenants, colleagues in both leasing and sales, and contractors. I measure my success by the amount of assistance I’ve been able to provide to all parties involved.

One of my passions is outrigger canoe paddling whose roots can be traced to the Polynesian culture of Tahiti and Hawaii. It is not only a sport but a way of life that incorporates “ohana” (family) and fosters generosity and kindness.

California real estate is not cheap which means rents in California are some of the highest in the nation. Plenty of us are humble property owners hoping to have enough to retire later in life. Then, there are those of hoping to invest someday but looking for a good rental to call home – for now. No matter where you are in this journey, Kokua Rentals is here to help. We will help you lease your property or find a rental and we want to give back.

San Francisco Bay Area

History

What's my story?

Before San Francisco, I worked as a Program Director at The California Cryobank, Inc. in Los Angeles. Although I loved that company and my job, I felt it was time for a change. I moved to San Francisco and, at first, I hoped to work at  UCSF or Genentech. Then, I decided I wanted to make a big change but wasn’t sure which direction to go so I took the Johnson and Johnson aptitude test. The results surprised me by pointing me to real estate related jobs and careers and the rest is history. I was able to combine my organizational skills with a desire to help people. Leasing fits my work style and I love collaborating between property owners, tenants, contractors and other real estate professionals.

Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, I discovered outrigger canoe paddling. I doubt I would still be in the real estate industry (or the North Bay) as it provides balance to my life. Not only is it a competitive sport but I’ve learned and experienced the wonderful Hawaiian culture and traditions that come with it. I aim to integrate these values into my work and career.

Kokua Cares

GIVING BACK

Creating Kokua is a way to give back to others in need. Our intention is to donate a percentage of commissions to a non-profit company every year.

Let’s KOKUA 2021!

2020 was unprecedented and it was (still is) heartbreaking to hear the number of people that suffered from the coronavirus.  But, the leading cause of death is still cancer. Late in 2020, a great friend of my family who was really a brother to me passed away from colon cancer. As a tribute to him and to his family and to many others that are still fighting for their lives, I dedicate this year’s charitable donation to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. Please get screened if you are of age or remind others in your family to just do it.

What My Clients Have to Say

I first met Liz 5 years ago. I was looking for a leasing agent that knew the SOMA area. I was given two referrals. The first one never called me back. The second, Liz, called me back right away. I was new to the landlord business and Liz spent the time to educate me on how the rental business works. I remember before signing on with her, she invited me to a flat listing that was comparable to what I had. She showed me what features renters preferred. That was invaluable information. She has always been, quick to reply, honest, knowledgable, and professional. She has also been a resource for referrals for property managers and trades people.

Landlord
I highly recommend Liz Kim. She helped my wife and I rent out our Piedmont area home within a month and provided great guidance and service along the way. Her services included a professional photo shoot of our property as well as listing your property on a number of proprietary listing services. We had originally listed on Craigslist along with the services provided by cozy.co by ourselves but didn't get the renter profiles we were looking for. Liz was able to provide a good number of prospective tenants sourced from professional relocation services that included corporate executives and families. I'm confident that without Liz's help my wife and I would not have been able to find the quality tenant in the timeframe that we wanted.

Homeowner
Liz was recommended to us by a friend several years ago and has been our go-to rental agent ever since. When I first met her, I was a little apprehensive (my wife would say scared) as she's very professional and direct. These are the same traits I have come to value and rely on over the years. From a landlord perspective, Liz makes finding the perfect renter relatively stress free. She handles the whole thing - listing, marketing, open houses, showings by appointment, screening, and develops her list of best potential renters. Even when the rental market is crazy competitive, she somehow manages to quickly find the nicest problem-free tenants who are respectful of both our property and neighbors. In short, she's everything you want in an agent.
